This week we want to highlight our last Class Captain and Mija for our Class of 2024. We love Barbara and the amazing energy she brings to every program/event. Thank you Barbara for all that you do, and for your willingness to share your time with our hijas.
There are so many reasons why I love being part of this organization! But I think the best part is when I see how we are making a difference in each girls life and their family. I have gotten to meet some of the alumni and hearing how circle shaped their future makes me so excited for my girls and what is to come. Plus, being a Latina I think if I had this opportunity when I was their age, it would have made things a lot different. Knowing that I can make a difference in their lives and be a person that I wish I had…I am all about it.
I have a great memorable moment! Every year we take the girls to a college tour, and for their first year we made the choice of Queens University of Charlotte (Go Royals!). I was so excited for this because that is my alma mater and I was all about the girls seeing Queens in person. Also some of Circle alumn have also gone there or are currently attending, so that was exciting. We had an amazing tour and as we were walking back to the car, a group of them were saying “I want to go her one day too!” Even though we are so far away from that moment, and they ‘re path might take them somewhere else, it was the first time I heard them all picture themselves at college, and that they had that opportunity was the best! Of course, if any of them actually end up going to Queens I will be the proudest Class Captain ever!!
I was born in Venezuela, My family migrated to the US when I was eight and I grew up in Hilton Head South Carolina. I attended Queens University of Charlotte and has been living in Charlotte since. I am getting Married at the end of 2019 to my Fiance, who I actually met in College while he was studying abroad from the Netherlands. I love to be outdoors and I am training for my first full marathon.
Becoming a Mija does not only give you the opportunity to ensure your investment is going towards the career choice of a young Latina, but it allows you to create amazing opportunities for Latino families in Charlotte. Circle de Luz’s mission is to empower our girls and their families to see beyond their immediate surroundings. We provide them with tools to be able to envision a future filled with success and to overcome the so many barriers they face on a daily basis.
