Rush Beam, a Davidson, NC native, is hosting his first big city art show in San Francisco, CA this Friday, May 7th. Called Landscaped: Reflection, his collection of drawings and paintings highlights his interest in the interior life and how it expresses itself in the world. As part of his commitment to encouraging that expression in young artists, Rush is donating the proceeds of one of his drawings, up for silent auction at the show, to Circle de Luz. Married to Erin Lane Beam, one of the founders of Circle de Luz, Rush wanted to recognize and affirm the work being done by CDL to offer young girls a place where their creativity flourishes; most recently in a painting class taught by a Colombian artist. He hopes the proceeds will continue to make art education a vital part of the program to radically empowers young Latinas.

See above for the piece, Somber Rhythm, being auctioned on CDL’s behalf. To place an absentee bid on the piece or see more from the artist, visit www.rushbeam.com.

Check out this great article by Ret Boney of the Philanthropy Journal on one of our founding board members.  We’ve excerpted the opener here and included the link to the whole article below…

Inspired by the Latina teens she is helping prepare for college, Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a wife, mother and full-time worker, has almost completed her freshman year at Strayer University.

Negron-Rios, who is Puerto Rican, was raised in a single-parent household in the Harlem community of New York City, and while she was surrounded by strong and positive female role models, none had gone to college.

“I knew it was an option,” she says. “But I didn’t know how to go about it. It was more important to me to get out into the working world and not be a burden to my mom.”

She had intended to go to college at some point, but life kept getting in the way — a job loss in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks; marriage; and the birth of her son.

In 2004 she and her family relocated to Charlotte for work and to be closer to her husband’s family, a move that resulted in severe culture shock.

“Growing up in New York City, it wasn’t an effort to hold on to my cultural identity because you’re hit in the face with it everywhere you go,” Negron-Rios says of the city’s music, food and densely populated Latino neighborhoods.

But it was different in Charlotte, where communities are more spread out and she has to drive 20 miles to find a grocery that carries the products she uses for cooking.

“I cried for the first year-and-a-half,” says Negron-Rios, who now works as an executive assistant at GMAC Financial Services. “I felt like no one really understood me here because there’s not as much of a Hispanic population.”

That began to change in 2007 when she connected with Rosie Molinary, a Latina educator and author who was planning to launch a giving circle that would provide intensive mentoring to middle-school Latinas, along with the promise of funding to help with post-high-school education.

Negron-Rios joined the effort and became a founding board member in 2008.

Vote for Circle de Luz (everyday. 10 times a day) to win a grant from Pepsi! February 1, 2010

Pepsi has launched a new grant initiative where they will give up to 32 community organizations grant funds each month.  Circle de Luz has applied for one of the grants and part two of the process takes place this entire month when people around the country vote for their favorite ideas.  Could you take a minute everyday between now and February 28th to vote for Circle de Luz to receive a $5,000 grant to support our programming with the girls?  When you vote, you’ll see that Pepsi provides a link for you to quickly “tweet” the opportunity and share the opportunity on Facebook and we would also greatly appreciate you doing that as well as forwarding this link to others who you think might be interested in radically empowering adolescent girls.

Here’s the link.  If you have Facebook, you can sign in to vote through Facebook or you can register (it just takes about 30 seconds) the first time you visit and then all of your other visits will go much quicker.

Look for Circle de Luz, Empower Young Latinas through a mentoring and scholarship program.

Thanks so much for your support of Circle de Luz!
